Ocean Shore
The tide was low that morning, and the rocks were slick with seaweed and salt. I remember the way the ocean breathed — in long, steady exhales that filled the air with mist and scent. There was a quiet to that place, but never silence. The waves spoke in their rhythms, gulls called in the distance, and the wind moved through everything, hair, coat, thoughts.
I sat on a stone worn smooth by centuries, knees pulled close, watching the foam chase itself across the shoreline. The sun hadn’t fully broken through the clouds yet, and the light was soft, silvery, diffused like a secret. Everything smelled alive, brine and wind, wet rock and driftwood, and that strange, beautiful note that only comes from the sea: a mixture of minerals, cold air, old wood, and something ancient that can't be named.
There was comfort in its rawness. Nothing manicured or planned, just the world, immense and simple, in motion. I didn’t speak. I didn’t need to.
Even now, years later, whenever I catch that scent, salt and stone, wood and air, it brings me back to that moment. Not just to a place, but to a feeling: of stillness, awe, and belonging.
